Do you want your kids to develop more self-confidence, get better grades in school, have more discipline, make new friends, and learn how to defend themselves? Then check out our North Jersey kids martial arts classes here at Performance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Fair Lawn.

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created by the Gracie family in Brazil. Helio Gracie refined Judo techniques that he learned and modified them to work with his smaller body and weaker physical strength so that he could compete with larger people. It results in one of the most effective martial arts in the world. Jiu-Jitsu is primarily a ground fighting art, which kids love because it is basically wrestling around with your friends.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Better Than Karate or Other Martial Arts?

Jiu-Jitsu has some very big advantages over many martial arts. BJJ is much more effective and works in real-world scenarios, whereas most martial arts do not. Let me explain.

Jiu-Jitsu is a ground fighting art that was designed specifically for a smaller person to be able to defend themselves and subdue a much larger and stronger attacker. This is how Royce Gracie was able to defeat much stronger opponents in the Ultimate Fighting Championship even though he was a pretty small guy at about 170 lbs, and many of his opponents were in the 200–250 lbs range.

Another big benefit is that with Jiu-Jitsu there are no katas, or forms, which are essentially choreographed dance routines that do not work in the real world. So even though we hope no one ever has to use Jiu-Jitsu in a self-defense situation, we do want them to be able to properly defend themselves should it happen — with techniques that work in the real world.

Jiu-Jitsu is also a LOT OF FUN for kids, because it is basically a form of wrestling, and if we know one thing, it's that all kids LOVE to wrestle. You can probably prove that with the number of broken lamps and picture frames in your home.
